Painting near the Malkow lookout in the Bulkley Valley.

Here, the mountains rise like mythical gods-- the town of Smithers bowing humbly at their feet.    Foothills, patchworked with spruce, pine and poplar, light up like a reverential mosaic as Fall descends.  Single trees stand tall with a personality and form all their own.  In a burst of sacrificial colour they offer their foliage to the Mountains in the ritual of the season.

These paintings attempt to distill the essence of the mountain scenery into its elemental forms and colors.  Here, I am trying to do more than capture a scenery or a moment-- I am struggling to understand the fundamentals of the land.  In these paintings I use the forms, symmetry and lines of a tree as a lens to see the world.  The stained glass, woven effect that results is a metaphor, like the windows of a Church.  The flowing lines represent the inextricable interconnectedness of everything from the trees , earth, sky and people.  I hope to show the blurred oneness of every part of the painting's world.
